As part of the upcoming Budapest Water Summit (BWS), which will take place from the 28th to 30th of November 2016, GIWEH is proud to present the expert meeting
“Using International law to implement and monitor SDG 6.5; 6.6 and 6b” on November 30th from 11:00 – 12:00.

Organized by the Hungarian Government in cooperation with the World Water Council, the Budapest Water Summit aims to propose that shall be a source of peace, cooperation and sustainable development instead of conflicts water for all the countries. Within the Summit context, GIWEH will hold an expert panel about the Sustainable Development Goals water targets (6.5 and 6.6) from a legal perspective, demonstrating how legal analysis can help develop the roadmap for the implementation of these goals.           

Targets 6.5 and 6.6 of the Sustainable Development Goals are challenging targets with many dimensions. For instance, what are the parameters that need to be monitored to indicate that a water resources system is being managed in an ’integrated’ manner at all levels, including successful cooperation at the transboundary level? What do we need to measure to know that water related ecosystems are being protected and restored?  During this expert meeting three peer-reviewed papers will be presented. They will look at the indicators proposed by UN-Water to monitor SDG 6.5 and 6.6, and analyse these goals from the point of view of legal commitments of states to help generate a checklist of actions for public officials.
Presenters will give a short presentation of each paper, followed by comments from a first reader. After this questions will be opened to the floor.

The side event is aligned with the Budapest Water Summit objectives, as it promotes discussion and debate towards a shared understanding of integrated water resources management, transboundary cooperation, ecosystems protection and restoration, transparency and public participation.
