From 13-15 December 2016 Dr. Nidal Salim, Director General of GIWEH, was invited as a speaker to the symposium of national human rights centers for the Arab region to discuss the role of these centers in adopting and implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
The meeting was organized jointly by the National Center for Human Rights in Amman, the Arab Network of National Human Right Institutions, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human rights (OHCHR) at the Mariot Hotel, by the Dead Sea in Jordan.
The workshop discussed the Sustainable Development Goals, more specifically Goal 5 (Gender Equality), Goal 10 (Reduce Inequality) and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). Dr. Salim presented Goal 10 (Reduce inequality within and among countries) and linked it to the physical parameters such as Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Dr. Salim - representing GIWEH's value of including the most vulnerable people of society in development - presented inequality in three different dimensions: 1. affordability, 2. rural and urban development and 3. gender.
