While the right to water has been recognized by many countries, the road map for implementation is not always clear. On 15th September, Dr. Tobias Schmitz from the Global Institute for Water, Environment and Health (GIWEH), and Dr. Helène Boussard from the Geneva Academy for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights met with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Safe Water and Sanitation, Prof. Leo Heller. During this meeting, the group discussed the draft guidelines on the right to water in Africa, which is being developed for the African Commission for Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Dr. Schmitz has been supporting Dr. Boussard to draft these principles and guidelines to assist States to implement their obligation following the adoption of Resolution 300 on the right to water, by the African Commission in 2015. It is expected that the ACHPR will evaluate the draft document later this month, and the three of them agreed with the UN Special Rapporteur that the document would be shared for public inputs and comments following the ACHPR.
